The Blue Rider

The Blue Rider

Lukas was conceived in Bavaria, Germany, high in the Alps, while we were on a little vacation visiting my sister. We had just come from Munich, where we had seen an exhibition of Vasily Kandinski’s work at the Lenbachhaus, along with a special exhibit of his partner Gabrielle Münter’s work.

Then we were off to Murnau, where Kandinski and Münter lived for a time, and where The Blue Rider art movement was conceived. Their home had just been restored and opened as a museum. We were there in the very early Spring when the light was silvery and I could really see why they felt such inspiration! (See post about the day here) We gave Lukas the middle name Vasily after Kandinsky and feel a special affinity with the town of Murnau and the artwork of the Blue Rider movement.

Imagine my surprise when I found a blue rider for Lukas. He seems to really love it.

Karen, this is beautiful! How fitting for Lucas to find his own blue rider. kandinsky was very interested in children’s art and writes about it in his influential book, “Concerning the Spiritual in Art.”
    I’ll send you some quotes.
