blackberry season

September 7, 2011

as local as you can get

I am so into berries these days. The boysenberries weren’t enough—I am stocking up on raspberries and blueberries, and now that all the blackberry bushes are happening, I am doing my best to pick those too. They are very prickly though. Lukas and I went out to my parents to pick the other day and they were so hard to get to since the deer had eaten all the low branches. So then we went to their neighbor’s house, whom we also know from the local arts community. They are lovely people and welcomed us in to pick berries and even helped us pick. We gathered a few baskets before our schedule for lunch and nap called. But we’ll be back! Somehow we even have blackberries brambling over in our yard in town and they are tasty snacks. To everyone out there: this is it—blackberry season! Pick them and freeze them, you won’t be sorry!
