The equinox seems to have coincided perfectly with that new feeling in the air, when the ocean’s fog stops rolling in and the days are hot, soon to give way to first rains and cold in the evening. The squashes await final ripening (I read that the stems are supposed to be tan before you pick the butternuts) the chards and leeks await fall rain with anticipation, and the weather is perfect for my latest obsession, hula hooping! I love this hoop, it actually folds down into a small double hoop for traveling and it’s so much fun to do! All too soon this spectacular woodpile (all cut by my dad—thanks dad!) will be transformed into cozy fires.
